Felin Fach Griffin wins prestigious Les Routiers award

September 12, 2005: Felin Fach Griffin scooped the prestigious Les Routiers in Britain Wine Pub of the Year Award for Wales & The Marches last night at a glittering gala dinner in London.

Of Felin Fach Griffin, which is situated in scenic Brecon in Powys, the judges said: ‘this superb Welsh pub is one of a new superior breed where the proprietors have clearly spent considerable time and thought in putting together such an interesting and characterful collection of exceptionally good wines.’

A total of five categories, across six regions throughout the UK, was judged using a combination of feedback from the general public and reports from incognito inspectors in the field. The regions included London & The South-East, The South-West, Central & East Anglia, The North, Scotland, and Wales & the Marches.

To select the national winner, guide editors appointed independent judges to inspect each regional winner, keeping in mind Les Routiers’ core values: hospitality – friendly staff offering a genuine, warm welcome and taking pride in every aspect of their work; high quality food and drink – fresh, home-cooked food complemented by fine wines and ales – locally sourced if possible; idiosyncratic – privately-owned with individual style and charm; value for money – to exceed expectations within a realistic budget. Les Routiers’ spokesman Nicholas Stanley said: ‘Our annual awards recognise members who excel at meeting the high standards required for membership. In this category we searched for a passion and enthusiasm displayed through the wine list and where value for money was combined with wide-reaching choice in both the house and fine wine collection.’

Les Routiers in Britain establishments, regarded as the crème de la crème of the food, drink and hospitality industries, are all identified by the famous Les Routiers red and blue symbol. Les Routiers is an eclectic network of independent establishments across Britain, identified by the famous red and blue symbol synonymous with quality hospitality and value for money. Les Routiers has harnessed a rich variety of establishments from small hotels, restaurants, B&B’s, pubs and inns, to cafés, teashops and food producers in dedicated guidebooks that offer discerning travellers a genuine alternative to large chains and conglomerates. These hidden gems, situated in country villages, towns and cities, are real discoveries. Regular visits by incognito inspectors ensure the company’s core values are upheld, and all establishments display the Les Routiers symbol with pride. Originally established in France in the 1930s to offer French long-distance lorry drivers home cooking and reasonably priced accommodation, Les Routiers in Britain has adopted the same core values of individual style and charm, excellent value for money, a warm welcome, quality food and drink with an emphasis on fresh, local produce, fine locally-brewed ales and inspired wine lists.
